Tulamben Bay, situated on the north-east coast of Bali is perhaps one of the world’s most famous dive sites. Its fame derives from the fact that the three main dive sites have completely different characteristics and are accessible from the beach. The diversity of marine life in Tulamben Bay is the result of the plankton rich waters that surge through the Lombok Strait from the Pacific Ocean into the Indian Ocean. The most famous and popular dive site at Tulamben Bay is the USAT Liberty. This 120 metre long cargo ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during World War II. Efforts were made to tow the ship to Singaraja but the vessel was eventually beached at Tulamben. In 1963, Gunung Agung erupted and this caused the ship to slide back into the sea. The ship finally sank approximately 30 metres from the beach at a depth of 5 metres to 30 metres. The wreck is carpeted with different coral species and the fish life includes sweetlips, batfish, groupers, shrimps, stingrays and octopus can all be seen in and around the wreck. The huge shoal of circling trevally is a highlight of the wreck dive.

The Drop-off/Wall The starting point of the Drop-off/Wall is a short walk down the beach towards the south entering the water on a sandy slope. The Drop-off/Wall starts at about 12 metres with Ghost pipefish, pufferfish, shrimps and bumphead parrot fish. There is an impressive array of sponges, corals and a huge purple gorgonian fan.

Coral Garden The Coral Garden nestles between the Liberty wreck and the Drop-off. The diversity of marine life here is comparable to the wreck and Drop-off. There is a profusion of hard and soft corals, sponges, nudibranches and the fish life includes Blue Ribbon eels and bumphead parrot fish.

Tulamben Bay is one of our highly recommended dive and snorkelling trips.
